The only way to diagnose some problems in your mouth is with x-rays. Without x-rays, the doctor cannot provide you with a full diagnostic exam. X-rays show what cannot be seen. They show bone levels, which correlate with periodontal disease, decay between teeth, and any infections at the root of teeth. Infections can be present without pain or other symptoms.
